This would allow the camera to automatically adjust its aperture depending on lighting conditions wider for low light to capture more detail, narrower for bright environments to improve sharpness.
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models may soon be further differentiated from the lineup below them, thanks to camera upgrades that could be exclusive to the larger Pro Max model. The latest leak, shared by a Chinese tipster, suggests that Apple could reserve its new variable-aperture camera for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Rumours about an exclusive camera upgrade have been circulating since 2024. With the new iPhone iteration, Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a variable-aperture camera to its Pro models. This would be a first for any iPhone, but it was previously understood that the feature would be available on both Pro models.
According to tipster Ice Universe, that may not be the case. In a post on Weibo, the tipster claimed that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will exclusively feature a variable aperture.
The revelation that the iPhone 18 Pro Max would be equipped with a variable-aperture lens was already hinted at by a leak that surfaced in June, when internal files from Apple supplier Tata Electronics were reportedly leaked. The files revealed that the iPhone 18 Pro Max would feature a new Sony IMX905 sensor with support for a variable aperture.

The files made no mention of the smaller iPhone 18 Pro, leading to speculation that only the Pro Max model would receive the new camera technology. Apple has never implemented a variable aperture on an iPhone. From the iPhone 14 Pro through the iPhone 17 Pro, the main camera has used a fixed f/1.78 aperture.
With a variable-aperture lens, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could allow users to manually adjust the aperture, similar to a DSLR camera. This could offer greater control over depth of field, allowing users to keep subjects sharper or create smoother background blur, depending on how Apple implements the feature.
Such camera exclusivity was last seen with the iPhone 15 series, when the iPhone 15 Pro missed out on the tetraprism telephoto lens that was included on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is also rumored to be slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor, while otherwise sharing most specifications with the smaller iPhone 18 Pro. Both Pro models are expected to launch next month alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone, reportedly called the “iPhone Ultra.”
